The cautionary tale

The doctor today said that mom needs to quit drinking as in the last three weeks she has gotten worse not better.

Later, I was listening to Iggy Pop on Fresh Air, who has a new album out; he was describing his near death experiences and how he was there one time, overdosed, on the brink of death, and heard his mother’s voice calling him back. He said she was the one who really cared for him.

I remember a time before when mom was on a downward spiral and had a tube down her throat when she said to me in a barely audible whisper, “I thank God every day for you.”

And my come to Jesus, I just need to accept that she is not going to stop drinking and this is her choice. And I need to give up on what I want – a healthy and happy mom – and accept the one that is there, who accepts me as I am.
