The Pelican Rodeo
All along the lagoon in City Park are signs that say NO FISHING as the park wants to repopulate for a Bass Fishing Rodeo that is coming up end of March. Only pelicans can’t read, so while a few months ago it was man against fowl in competition for these tasty finned creatures, now fowl is winning by a long shot.
This morning, a swarm of pelicans, both white and brown, were shucking and diving and feasting on the fat fish that are repopulating those waters. Almost as a caveat hangs a dead cormorant by his wing after being caught up in an ancient fishing lure that is attached to a tree by string. The wing is outstretched neither symbolizing flight or freedom, but instead as yet another sign to beware those of you who fish in these waters.
Two pelicans swam nearby as if portents were as incomprehensible as signs.
