The perfect storm
New Orleans knows how to throw a storm – brilliant lightning, roaring thunder, monsoon rain – darkness, wetness – perhaps we know how to do a storm so well we had the perfect storm – Katrina – but I don’t welcome that back into our universe. Yesterday, Terrence Blanchard talked about how he had evacuated and was looking for his mother and calling her cell for two weeks and when he finally reached her he said, “Why didn’t you answer the phone?” and she said, “Oh, that was what I was hearing. I had my cellphone on my purse.” No, we don’t want another Katrina but right now it is dark dark dark, the thunder is making the whole universe tremble, and lightning is etching itself against the blackened sky – and we sit listening to Philip Glass and Loca waits by the window – and Arlene stares – and today it is a perfect storm.
