Connections

When people ask me what I do I say I spot trends and that is because as soon as something arouses my curiosity I start seeing connections. Or they start coming my way. I flew home from NY as the snow was gently starting to fall there and it was 65 degrees in New Orleans with the full moon over the bayou and I was thinking about how odd it is to be older.

I was in the bathroom putting away my things and Tin walked in and turned off the light.

Now THAT was amazing. He couldn’t reach the light switch before I left for NY three days ago.

While in the lobby waiting to go up and see a client, I couldn’t help but look at this giant painting on the wall that was a swarm of people entitled Redes – Spanish for groups or crowds – and it was painted by an artist who was 90 years old. Quite amazing.

A friend sent this link to me about Donald Hall and aging. I hope at 83 I too, would still delight in sitting down to write and write and write.

Saw a cool vanity fair piece on trends and how every 30 yrs throughout history things have changed drastically … except for recently. The 90s to now look very similar stylistically. Wondering why the void of innovation? Is it the disconnect that’s a product of the Internet and social media? http://m.vanityfair.com/style/2012/01/prisoners-of-style-201201

I think this is a good argument –

Why is this happening? In some large measure, I think, it’s an unconscious collective reaction to all the profound nonstop newness we’re experiencing on the tech and geopolitical and economic fronts. People have a limited capacity to embrace flux and strangeness and dissatisfaction, and right now we’re maxed out. So as the Web and artificially intelligent smartphones and the rise of China and 9/11 and the winners-take-all American economy and the Great Recession disrupt and transform our lives and hopes and dreams, we are clinging as never before to the familiar in matters of style and culture.

Because I was just speaking to my 23 year old niece who doesn’t have time for Facebook – why? – because she is out there living her life with her friends. They communicate by text more than we might have by phone, but I, who have covered media for ever and a day, am overwhelmed by the onslaught of virtual places to be.
