What sort of year awaits?

Apparently Pantonne announced its color for 2011 – Honeysuckle – a vibrant color for a year that is supposed to be filled with dazzle. Huh? Well, maybe their tea leaves are telling them something mine aren’t. I see next year as another one of those interstitials where we let go of the trapeze in 2008 and started plunging downward in a rapid spiral in 2009, and then 2010 we were sort of floating up and down and 2011 is a year of transformation – so not necessarily an arrival, but a continuation of the flight that began now two years ago. So my color of the year, and you heard it here first is Magenta – a deeper, richer shade of red than Honeysuckle that carries with it depth of experience not just the gaiety that Honeysuckle portends, but more of a real life experience.

Perhaps I’m colored (ahem) by my tantric meditation last night where it was just me and my guru and a dark room that housed all the darkness inside of us – we chanted to Kali – the goddess who chops off the head of ego and says “ba ha ha” you must live in harmony with your dark side and you must incorporate it into your narrative. Funny, because my neighbor who is working on the mahogany columns out front has been teaching me how to read the story of wood and the columns now show this incredible darkness that was hidden before and the more they work on them the more they coax the true narrative out of the wood and the more beautiful and rich they become.

So too is our lot in life, to embody both our joy and our sorrow and to not wrap ourselves in flimsy honeysuckle vibrancy, but instead to carry around the weight of our highest highs and our lowest lows. Magenta – my favorite color in the Crayon box since I was a very young child.

Tin’s favorites are blue and purple.
