The lottery

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I was speaking to a colleague today who quoted Warren Buffet as saying, if you were born in America, you won the lottery. Today as America lost 70,000 jobs and the world groaned against the first global recession, I wonder how long we will continue to believe that our birthright is fortune.

The A-Z of desire.

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

On Jet Blue, I was sitting in my comfy seat, looking at CNN on the small screen and reading the NY Times Magazine about the once again age old question of what do women want? There has been a lot of research lately on this subject, I seem to come across it everywhere, about how women’s sexual response is not geared to gender (no matter what their orientation is) but the most important element of any of this research has been something that speaks to both genders.

Desire.

If you feel desired, you respond as a desirable being. (Well, most of the time.) But the key is that a woman’s desire is not obvious like a man’s, and so it exists in these other realms of mystery.

Jet Blue is really the best airlines.

Up up and away

It’s a misty, overcast, and mellow Sunday outside but I’m headed to bitter cold. 18° in NY and colder in Boston. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Why do people live there?

40 Tips for Enjoying Life

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

A friend from California sent this and then I modified it:

Forty Tips To Enjoying Life

1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile.
2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.
3. Sleep for at least 7 hours every night.
4.. Live with the 3 E’s – Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.
5. Play more.
6. Read more books this year than you did last year.
7. Make time to practice meditation or yoga.
8. Spend time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6.
9. Dream more while you are awake.
10. Eat more foods that grow on trees or plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
11. Drink plenty of water.
12. Try to make at least three people smile each day.
13. Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip.
14. Forget issues of the past. Don’t remind your partner of his or her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your happiness in the present.
15. Don’t have negative thoughts of things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
16. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
17. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
18. Smile and laugh more.
19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don’t hate others.
20. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
21. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
22. Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present.
23. Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about. Don’t compare your partner with others.
24. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
25. Forgive everyone for everything.
26. What other people think of you is none of your business.
27. Time heals everything, or at least lessens the pain.
28. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
29. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.
30. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
31. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
32. The best is yet to come.
33. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
34. Do the right thing!
35. Call your family.
36. Your Inner most is always happy. So, be happy.
37. Each day give something good to others.
38. Don’t over do. Keep your limits.
39. When you awaken alive in the morning, be thankful.
40. Dance, move, shake, listen to music with your body.

You can’t go home

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

I spent sixteen long years pining for home in the relative safety of the Bay Area. I lived stupidly there, not locking my back door, not watching my back, not worried about much of anything when I was coming home late at night. A policeman told me that I was foolish, that crime seeks opportunity. And so I changed my ways.

I wanted to come home, and I did.

But what about here in New Orleans? Does crime seek opportunity? And if so, what the fuck? Are we providing this much opportunity? It’s bad pre-K, it’s bad post-K, it’s bad then good then bad again.

A neighbor writes in the Times Picayune about his own hate/love of this city and the crime. It’s worth reading.

But again, what will it take to get this city on the right track – what will it take to make peace in the streets?

Tatjana’s Day

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

January 24th is Tatiana’s Day in Russia and celebrated in Eastern Europe as well. How fitting that Saint Tatiana was the patron saint of students, considering T is director of the newbies at school.

Right now, I am still and know that I am a powerful co-creator. All my dreams are within my grasp. I see them; I feel them; I live them. I am grateful.

This is our protection here. We could get geese as they say noise is the biggest deterrent against crime, but dogs are just more fun.

Dinner among friends

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Friends came for dinner last night and were quite alarmed about the rash of crime that has erupted in our neighborhood. They live uptown and one couple brought a visiting friend from El Lay. I told them that this is relatively a safe neighborhood and they have more to fear Uptown in the Isle of Denial than here because this seems to be the work of one psychotic. Well turns out the police were able to get an id on this guy and now there is an APB out and kudos to NOPD for getting down to business.

After Katrina, we didn’t even have a crime lab set up and when Helen Hill was murdered, the assailant was never caught because there was nothing set up to find criminals. The main thing is to root out this crap in every neighborhood not just ours.

BTW – the photo I posted earlier was a composite and not an actual photo. I stand corrected.
