Sometimes the safest place is on a ledge
I characterized myself as a risk taker my whole life. Was born to a father with gypsy in his blood and a mother who left the creature comforts of a predictable life behind and followed my father into a world of their own making. But I learned that I was not a risk taker at all – I always had someone with me to make the big jumps and I always had someone waiting in the wings as I transitioned relationship – it’s called coward in some areas.
But then I learned how to fly solo and when I spread my wings I realized I had really been missing something fantastic. I learned how to comfort myself and how to be my own safety net. It had this incredibly profound effect on me.
I’m listening to a lecture series that my friend lent me and in it the guy quotes the Tao te Ching (how perfect since I left off my meditations on the Tao last year when things got crazy). But one of the things he says right off the bat is Do Something New. In other words, shake out the dust, roll away the moss, and start into something that sings to you and gives you meaning.

Let go of all those ‘what ifs’ you’ve been allowing to keep you from doing exactly what you really want to do. The stars guarantee that you’ll be smart enough to only take well-calculated risks. So whether it strikes you that this would be the perfect time to try skydiving, bungee-jumping, telling that long-distance lover that you want them to come home now or something equally precarious, if it feels right, do it. You can’t win if you don’t play.
