General Motors – RIP
GM filed for bankruptcy this morning. One of the largest multinational advertisers and the largest domestic auto manufacturers. GM was once a lion, but I think its desire to hold onto old ways and not invent new ways is how it got into this mess. It’s almost like an outline of what is wrong with most major corporations. Steve Balmer of Microsoft said there are three tenets of business – come up with a good idea, figure out to how monetize it, come up with another good idea.
General Motors was making cars, but they weren’t making cars of the future, they kept growing and growing as the population kept growing and growing and then competitors came into the market, and conscienciousness started shifting, but yet they kept growing and growing and buying other car manufacturers and expanding and expanding and then POOF, the imploded.
There are a lot of people who are going to lose their jobs because of this lack of foresight on an overly bloated and antiquated company. Hopefully, they will find new jobs that at more forward thinking companies. And hopefully, there will be an opening to invent new domestic cars that are energy efficient and better designed and cars of the future.
