I’m going fishing – hook sinker line

I love to see people fishing along the bayou. The other day I was walking across the bridge by the sculpture garden in City Park and a man and two little boys were fishing down beside the lagoon. I asked them if they were catching anything and the man said not much. I said I think the pelicans are eating all the fish but the other day I saw a big whopping fish. The man asked me what it looked like and I told him and he said, that’s carp, nothing but an overgrown goldfish. I said, can you eat ’em? He said, some do, not me.

Our neighbor got his boat out on Friday in the late afternoon and by 4PM was sitting in Bayou Bienville with drum jumping in his boat. He came home two hours later with an ice chest filled to the brim with black drum. So guess what we had for lunch today? Fish tacos – yum – I pan sauteed the fish in olive oil with Paul Prudhomme’s Seafood Magic and made cole slaw from shredded cabbage and a homemade dressing of mayo, white vinegar and tarragon with Turkish red pepper. Yum is all I got to say – yum yum yum.

T says she is going to learn to fish. And I thought if we had a boy I’d teach him to fish. Hey, why not teach a girl? So now we sent some fresh baked chocolate cookies to die for so that we can worm our way onto the next fishing trip and learn how to catch and then clean these fish ourselves. We want to be self sufficient, off the grid or just able to eat fresh fish tacos when we want them.
