I’ve always had this deep curiosity about China much like every North American I know that is obsessed with Japan – my obsession has been with the larger country and its language and people. That is why I obsessively went through a China film period, when I just wanted to see everything I could and just yesterday, we watched an Ang Lee film that T had ordered from Netflix called Lust, Caution. The movie takes place during WWII when the Japanese Imperial Army occupied Shanghai. It’s interesting to note just days ago the headlines in the NYT described Japan’s changing its military focus to China from Russia. And recently I received an email from my brother asking me about my thoughts on China and its lust for gold (apparently China has been buying up gold by the truckloads).

I’m not sure why China is buying gold, it could be because gold is high as long as currencies are unstable and since China is what is keeping currencies unstable, gold is high. So maybe we should all buy gold. And I’m not sure if China’s Lust for power is a Cautionary Tale for every country in the world, but how is it possible to stop this massive empire from gobbling up all the natural resources in the world?

I do know Lust, Caution is a marvelous tale of intrigue, lust and an interesting look into a time when ordinary people were forced to make extraordinary choices in their lives.
