Taking care of home first

Yesterday, I was running with Loca in the park in an effort to shed these ten unwanted pounds that feel like my new ball and chain. We happened upon two people with border collies and Loca wanted to sniff so I stopped to let them. One of the border collies was a puppy and I asked how long she had had her and the woman said, “One day.” I said wow, she’s very cute. The woman said, “I got her from a shelter in Tennessee.”

I almost passed out. TENNESSEE! Are you joking. In the past three weeks, we have rescued Wolfie, friends rescued another dog, two emails have circulated about three labs that need a home.

I didn’t want to discomfit her, so I just walked on, but I couldn’t help being vexed. Take care of the dogs in New Orleans first, I wanted to tell her in no uncertain terms. We have so many dogs in need of a good home.
