The Frog and the Toad
The other night I read a story to Abby about the Frog and the Toad. The frog had a dream that he was the Greatest Bestest frog in the universe and he was on stage and playing the piano and Toad (his friend) was sitting in the audience – and when he was done, everyone clapped and he shouted to Toad “can you play this well?” but Toad looked small. Then the Frog did many other things the bestest and greatest and he kept looking out to Toad and showing off and Toad kept getting smaller and smaller till Toad finally disappeared.
15 years ago when my mother was acting out – picking up a man at a gas station, giving a crack addict the money I had just sent her, and various assorted things of this nature – I decided to disown her and I said, “I don’t need her.” And a good good friend told me, “Maybe she needs you.”
Lesson: even the greatest, bestest daughter needs to be humble.
