Keep your hand wide open
My Yemaya statue that I light a candle for my mom by has her hands wide open and that was the subject last night when Darrin came to trim Tin’s afro. Since the storm he has been using the basement of a friend for his art studio and it was built on largesse of someone having space, and someone needing space, not about making money or not.
The hands wide open are also in the lyrics of Abby Lincoln’s Throw It Away, which is a mesmerizing song about how to live your life – you can never lose a thing if you throw it away. We had watched For The Love of Ivy a while back that stars Abby Lincoln and Sidney Poitier. This movie predates The Help that is up for an academy award and which I have no interest in, but For the Love of Ivy is a romp through a period that gets the time spot on and offers a good slice of life into both tracks – white and black – of the period.
Recently, we watched Nothing But A Man and if you are looking for an award winning movie this one is an unflinching look at how one man confronts racism in the 60s. It portrays Abby Lincoln as a preacher’s daughter and Ivan Dixon as Duff, he does a remarkable portrait of a man trying to keep it real when the world around him is surreal. This movie is a must see. And what I wonder is how come I never heard about it before?
